It is very sturdy when set up
The cup holder I wanted to install this in was on my reclining couch! It worked perfectly.Pros: The joint nearest the cup insert has teeth–which means the joint does not move when tightened. It also means you really need to loosen the screw quite a bit before attempting to adjust it.The top joint expands, so it is quite easy to get the holder at the right place for use.Cons: The adjusting nut the makes the grippers pop out is extremely difficult to turn. I was impressed with the amount of adjustment possible.I bumped the iPad several times getting out of the chair, but the adjustment on the joint cup did not change.
