Decent for an economy iPhone Case
I own an iPhone XR – “(Product) Red”. I’ve tried over a half dozen cases. I am discerning as most haven’t met my expectations (one case I almost immediately tossed into the trash – I finally did throw it away on the 3rd day). I also like cases that have clear backs to display the color of my iPhone.With that knowledge about the reviewer, here are my thoughts:Pros:(1) Clear back – as I just said, I prefer that so I can see the color of the phone.(2) I prefer cases that have a rubber or TPU back over Poly-Carbonate (PC) – aka plastic – because I feel it provides a softer, more cushioned landing if dropped.(3) Tactile side buttons – they work (several cases I’ve owned made it difficult or impossible to use the side buttons).(4) This case comes with (2) tempered glass screen protectors – MUCH better than plastic covers of the all-in-one cases.(5) PC side frame – the sides of TPU are always the first part of a TPU case to discolor and turn yellowish. The PC frame of this case essentially hides and conceals this area as it starts to discolor. As for real “protection”, I doubt the PC really does much (the PC frame fits inside the TPU so you have a “soft rubber bumper” that surrounds the iPhone).Cons:(1) The TPU does yellow over time – personally I haven’t yet found an anti-yellowing TPU.(2) The tempered glass protector fits like a glove – that’s great – but it’s hard to put on b/c of the tight fit (instructions say the screen is the last component to be put on).(3) The red case – it’s bright red. In sunlight it looks like a red-orange color. It does contrast a bit with the red iPhone but the contrast isn’t as annoying indoors (the color contrast is acceptable but not ideal). If a color match is critical for you, then **do not** buy this case.(4) Opening the case takes a specific technique, it can be hard, and you must follow the technique or you risk breaking the plastic PC frame (if the PC frame breaks, the TPU part of the case will not fit so the entire case is obsolete).(5) There’s a trade-off in protection versus keeping a case slim. I prefer a slightly deeper “rim” on the top to protect the front of the iPhone (I’d prefer another 1mm or so of depth to keep the front of the phone from contacting the ground/floor if dropped face-down).Summary:For an “economy” case – it’s not bad – it does provide basic to moderate protection. It will NOT protect like an Otter Box or UAG case (among other premium brands), but in most cases you can buy 3-4 of these cases for the price of one premium. If you change cases regularly, this is worth considering. If you want a case you plan to leave on for a year, or two or three, choose a premium brand.I’d rate this about 3 3/4 stars, rounded-up to 4-stars.
