NO MORE SWIPE SCREEN TO OPEN!!! YEAð My 5th kindle and the best.
This is my 5th Kindle and I love it. I had the original scroll wheel Kindle, then the 1st gen Kindle Touch, the 1st gen Paperwhite, the10th gen Paperwhite, and now the 11th gen basic Kindle with no locked screen ads. I grew to hate the ads with their stupid blurbs. Never had an ad that appealed to me or led to a book purchase. Plus, I always considered swiping to open the Kindle to a stupid waste of time. It is there to keep the ad in your face a little longer. The Kindle Touch had ads on its locked screen, but there was no swipe to open, it went straight to where I had left off just like my new Kindle.Now this new Kindle with no ads opens instantly to the last page read in the book. When it is turned off the screen shows wonderful images: fountain pen caps, dip pen and ink bottle, pencil points, etc. Very artistic. The screen size is identical to my 11th gen Paperwhite., the body a lot thinner, a little narrower and a little taller. And lighter. This basic Kindle has a tiny bezel. I made touching mistakes with the totally flat Paperwhite bezel when a finger would wonder onto the screen. Almost the whole surface of the case has a lovely satin finish. The “Kindle” name on the front is shiny and the Amazon Arrow on the back is recessed and shiny. I made the mistake of ordering the fabric case after I had ordered the Kindle, and it came 5 days later. I did. not take it anywhere until the case came. I consider the case to be necessary to protect the Kindle when carrying around and it reduces the tendency to slide off surfaces. Also keeps the screen cleaner. Love this fabric case.My mistake with my first Kindle Paperwhite was buying a cheap case to save money. It was imitation leather and a good case until the cheap leatherette surface started flaking off. The cover also warped over time, though that was more cosmetic than a problem. By the time I wanted a new case, Amazon had none to fit it anymore. I learned my lesson and bought Amazon’s fabric case with my second Paperwhite and with this new Kindle. The first fabric case looks as good after 4 years of heavy use as it did new.While this Kindle is very lightweight, it has no “cheap” feeling at all. Thinner than all the others. Turning on, downloading. books, searching, opening the dictionary are all much faster than the 11th Paperwhite ever was (it seems to have gotten slower and very quirky this past year. A number of times when I opened the dictionary it froze requiring a restart. Other times it froze and had to be restarted).Not being waterproof is not a problem as I don’t read in the rain, near pools, nor the surf. The slight step up from the screen to the bezel does not prevent me from using my remote page turner. The new Kindle came with the battery charged to 50% and lasted most of a week before it dropped to 30%. I charged it to 73% some days ago and, after heavy use it is only down to 69%. I keep the backlight at level 1, which is sufficient for reading in the dark. I have never had any need to have the backlight higher than level 4 on my 2 Paperwhite Kindles used heavily over the past 12 years. Unlike my other Kindles I have kept this one connected to WiFi all the time.I recommend this Kindle for anyone who wants a conveniently portable Kindle that fits in coat pockets and takes up little room in a purse or bag. Buying it at the start of Amazon’s Black Friday sale saved me the price difference of not irritating lock screen ads. PLUS I DON’T HAVE TO SWIPE TO OPEN ANY MORE!! Thank you Amazon for having this Kindle eBook reader.

Clutch Purchase, Better Than Expected
My Oasis is now inconsistent in holding a charge. It’s okay for use at home but unreliable when traveling since I don’t know if the battery will last 3 days or 1 hour.I’m used to the Oasis’ warm light and 7″ screen, so I thought the new Paperwhite Signature would be a comparable purchase. Unfortunately, the product launch was less than a success and I didn’t want to risk getting a unit that needed to be returned. I decided on a stop-gap measure to tide me over until the kinks have been worked out of the Signature, hence this 6″ Kindle.Surprise! This little unit is so delightful that I’m no longer in a hurry to upgrade. I thought I would hate the 6″ screen because I ramp my print (Bookerly) to size 9 and the smaller screen real estate would necessitate more frequent page turns. True; but the small size and reduced weight make it so easy to hold and thumb the pages that I’m not even consciously turning them. And the warm light? I don’t miss it. This screen is so evenly lit and the print so crisp that it is even easier to read than my warm Oasis, which is saying something.Now the cons:If you have trouble reading the menu, dictionary entries, or page numbers on the 7″ screen, good luck with this 6″ because they are proportionately smaller. I need a magnifying glass to read how many minutes I have left in the chapter or to find my way around the dictionary. I’m not docking stars on this unit because it is the basic after all, but it is a gripe of mine with the premium models that they don’t have a way to enlarge pertinent information that isn’t book font. Many of us own Kindles BECAUSE we have eyesight issues. I would pay more for the ability to find my way around my Kindle library or homepage without outside aid. Anyway, beware, the 6″ is even more difficult in this regard.The outside case is crazy slippery, like wet-soap slippery. It’s not a big deal if you use a cover but I like to keep mine uncovered and I’ve had to add a strap to the back so that it doesn’t slip from my hands.One weird pro:Matcha. I chose this on a whim as I honestly didn’t care about the color. Surprisingly, this subtle framing of the screen is easier on my eyes than the black or darker colors of my previous Kindles. It’s something to consider if you are trying to decide between colors.Overall, I’m happy I made this purchase. The only reason I might consider a 7″ in the near future would be to gain the SLIGHTLY larger page numbers, etc. If Amazon made their menus size adjustable, I’d be pressing that buy-button in a heartbeat.

I have recently gotten into reading as an adult within the last couple of months. Iâve heard great things from other reader friends about Kindles, and Iâve wanted one for a hot minute. One day, I was looking at Kindles and it just so happened to be the release day of the new lineup. The somewhat affordable price tag and the BEAUTIFUL green matcha color sold me. Eagerly waited for it in the mail, and I am in love!! It is my first Kindle, and it is one of my most prized possessions. I appreciate the functionality of it, as well as the sleek look, and convenience of it. Iâve found myself reading more, and enjoying it to the same level (possibly even more) than I did to physical books. Such a nice, lovely cool little gadget. The battery life is better than I personally thought, as Iâve been reading almost every night for the past week, and I am only at 77% with an increased level of brightness. It has a nice speed, I donât feel as if anything is lagging, and the reading ability is nice â I appreciate the dark mode, change of font text, size, etc. I donât know what the standard is regarding all of those things, but as a new reader who had some extra money to spare and wanted to try something different, I donât regret it at all. If youâre on the fenceâ¦BUY IT!
